COVID-19: 7 POINTS TO CONSIDER BEFORE REOPENING SCHOOLS

It's been so long since the last time I wrote to you.

Well... as the school reopening starts to become a hot issue in this unstable pandemic situation, let's talk about the challenging and solution if we want to reopen schools.

Last night I joined a virtual summit: COVID-19: TEACHERS OF THE WORLD UNITE! held by Varkey Foundation at 1 pm BST (British Summer Time) or 7 pm Jakarta/WIB (time converter: https://www.thetimezoneconverter.com/).

Thanks to Bu Dayang Suriani, the Best Ten Global Teacher Prize Ambassador, who invited me to have discussions with Global Teacher Ambassadors and other teachers around the world. Through this Summit the voice of teachers around the world will be heard by UNESCO.

 As some countries start to reopen school in the beginning of June, the safety and health of teachers are the matters that must be thought and considered by government. Teachers are always in the front line to rebuild young people confidence. UNESCO which is fully committed to supporting governments and teachers has proposed 7 points as a guidance for policy-makers to ensure that teachers and students will stay safe and healthy if the school reopen.

The 7 points above are:

1. Social dialogue and communication

2. Safety and health

3. Teachers' psychological and social-emotional well-being

4. Teacher preparation and learning

5. Teacher deployment, rights and working conditions

6. Financial resources and investments

7. Monitoring and evaluation.

Policy-makers must think and reconsider deeply if they want to reopen schools. Can they support teachers and students to prepare such those 7 conditions to apply in school before reopening school? Though there are many challenges that we have, but together can make us stronger. We hope to God to make them happen.
